Environmental Impact of Air Emissions
1.Dust / Particulate Matter (PM10):
These particles penetrate most deeply into the lungs, causing major damages
in the respiratory system (e.g. asthma attack, cough, respiratory tract
irritation). Emissions of particulates include ash, soot and carbon
compounds, which are often the result of incomplete combustion.
2. Sulfur Oxides (SOx):
Air pollution by sulfur oxides is a major environmental problem. This compound
is harmful to plant and animal life, as well as many building materials.
Moreover, acid rain can be very damaging since it is corrosive to metals,
limestone, and other materials.
3. Nitrogen oxides (NOX):
Nitric oxide NO, like carbon monoxide CO, can combine with hemoglobin to reduce
the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood and nitrogen dioxide NO2
irritates the alveoli of the lungs.
4. Carbon dioxide (CO2):
One of the six greenhouse gases that contribute in the greenhouse phenomenon
when heat radiation from earth is absorbed by these gases causing a surface
temperature increase.
Environmental Impact of Effluents
If kiln dust reaches the plant sewer system, slurry is produced. This slurry may clog the sewer system.
Also spent lube oils from garage and workshops could pose a hazard if discharged into the sewer system, because they tend to coat surfaces causing maintenance problems. Furthermore, if they discharged to surface waters, they can interfere with the aquatic life in these surface waters and create unsightly floating matter and films.
Environmental Impact of Solid Wastes
Dust arises from crushing, mixing, and grinding in addition to by-pass kiln dust collected from electrostatic precipitator in the final grinding stage before packaging. It is worth noting that disposal in dumping area outside the factor of by-pass kiln dust requires addition of fixing agents otherwise dust emissions to air will take place with all its health impacts on surrounding population.
Environmental Impact of Noise
In cement factories, noise is generated from grinding and crushing. Constant noise causes an increase in blood pressure and may affect the nervous system. Moreover, it can reduce a person’s attention and concentration and cause hearing loss as a result of long period of exposure.
